A well known tip for making things easier to remember is to put the facts to song (as Coach memorably did on Cheers).
My kids take a lot of spelling tests, and I thought I could help them out by making them listen to songs that already incorporate spelling. Here’s what I’ve come up with so far:
- Aerosmith: “Girl, before I met you, I was F-I-N-E fine.”
- Them: “G-L-O-R-I-A. Gloria!”
- Beastie Boys: “B-E-A-S-T-I-E. Oh I’m Mike D. Oh yeah, that’s me.”
- Kriss Kross: “I’m the D-A-Double D-Y-M-A-C. Yeah you know me.”
So, my kids are all set the next time they take a spelling test in which the words are fine, Gloria, Beastie, and Daddy Mac.
If you know any other songs that incorporate spelling, please add them to the comments, in case the teacher chooses different words.
May I add:
Aretha Franklin: “R-E-S-P-E-C-T. Find out what it means to me.” (Evidently, not alot, as Ms. Franklin is so morbidly obese that it makes Louie Anderson visibly uncomfortable.)
Make your boys watch the final scene in “Full Metal Jacket” as the Marines are walking throught the burning ruins of Hue, after being shot up by a sniper and committing a mercy killing, singing the Mickey Mouse song. M-I-C-K-E-Y M-O-U-S-E! War is hell, and strangely ironic.
And finally, Y-M-C-A, which is just self explanatory, really.
